Winter house workshop

Winter house workshop

A house with warm light in the window - what could be cozier in winter? I suggest we make one!

In this workshop, we will felt a small cozy house to create a magical winter atmosphere. Such a house can be used as a toy for the Christmas tree, an element for decorating the interior, as a package for a gift or a storage box.

The workshop is not complicated, but accuracy is required. You can work with any wool. Suitable for motivated beginners and for experienced enthusiasts.

During the livestream, I will show from beginning to end how to felt a cute house by wet felting technique. We will work together in a live broadcast. The broadcast time is about 2-2.5 hours.

What do we need?

  1. 1. Mat for wet felting. I use ribbed kitchen cupboard mat from IKEA shop. It sold in rolls in kitchen section of IKEA. You can find something similar.
  2. 2. Soap.
  3. 3. Water container.
  4. 4. Scissors with sharp tips.
  5. 5. Piece of mesh fabric (tulle, thin mosquito net or some fabric for tutu skirts), size A5 is enough. You can also use a piece of nylon stockings.
  6. 6. The material for the template -  a piece of thick plastic bag or laminate underlay.
  7. 7. Needle felting tools: mat (dishwashing sponge is fine) and felting needle size 38, gauge star. You can also do all work without it but it is good to have as a backup for fixing things.
  8. 8. Wool: I make a house with carded Bergschaf wool 28-32 microns but I also tried Australian merino wool in ribbon 18-20 microns and it works fine. You can use any wool: coarse, fine, combed or carded. For a ready house of about 6 cm in height and 3,5-4 cm wide, you need about 8-10 g of wool (5-6 for the house and 3-5 g to the roof).
  9. 9. The decor is optional. The surface can be covered with viscose fibres for some shine and texture. For snow effect on the roof you can use silk, viscose or some other fibres. But I like to make sparkling surface by adding glitter. You need glitter with fraction about 1-2 mm. Colour as desired, white, silver, gold, blue, petrol effect look great. You can check the glitter technique in my free icicle workshop.
  10. 10. A sewing needle and a thread to embroider the window frame and attach the roof. For the embroidery I use wool yarn, can be wool floss or mouline floss. If you leave the cottage without the slit windows, you can embroider the whole window, then you need more coloured thread for the frame and light (black, yellow). It is also possible to make an application.
  11. 11. You can use LED candles, LED-lamps for inflatable balloons or LED-garlands to light the house.
  12. 12. Silk ribbon or some thread to make a pendant.
  13. 13. Pliers.
  14. 14. Chopstick.
  15. 15. A measurement tape.
  16. 16. A hand towel.
