Let’s create an optimistic talisman of 2025 - a graceful snake charged for good luck.
In this workshop we will create a symbol of the new year using the nuno felting technique. The snake will have a frame, so it can be twisted for different tasks: it can turn into a spectacular bracelet or brooch, become a Christmas tree or table decoration, as well as a useful accessory - a holder for curtains or cables. And how many things you can invent on the basis of a snake!
This lesson is very useful: it includes felting on a frame and working with nuno felt, which will allow us to go wild with textiles and grow an experimental textured snake, which will definitely bring good luck in felting for sure.
At the workshop I will show you how to felt a snakee in the wet felting technique from start to finish. We will work together live. The broadcast time is 2-2,5 hours.
1. Mat for wet felting. I use ribbed kitchen cupboard mat from IKEA shop. It sold in rolls in kitchen section of IKEA. You can find something similar.
2. Soap.
3. Water container.
4. Scissors with sharp tips.
5. Piece of mesh fabric (tulle, thin mosquito net or some fabric for tutu skirts), size A5 is enough. You can also use a piece of nylon stockings.
6. Important. Needle felting tools: mat (dishwashing sponge is fine) and felting needle size 38, gauge star. Medium size needle will work too.
7. Wool: you can make a snake from absolutely any wool - from coarse carded wool you will get a fluffier and denser version, you will have to trim the surface, also deco will be more ‘eaten by wool’, and from extra fine merino it will be smoother and softer with more visible texture of decor. I work with extra fine Australian merino in 18-20 micron ribbon. The finished snake, measuring 33 cm in length and 1,5 cm in diameter, took 7g of extra fine Australian merino. The more wool you use, the thicker the snake will be.
8. Decor for nuno felting. All possible fibers and textiles: silk, viscose, linen, tencel etc., margilan silk, chiffon, various mesh fabrics, yarns, threads, soft lace, metallic mesh pipes, soft lace materials. Optional glitter for a sparkling surface ( preferably with particles of 1-2 mm, not a dust). In general, you can try everything that you find at hand. The main criteria is that it is better to use a thinner, softer and sparse (mesh, loose structured) material so that the wool fibers can penetrate through. There are some examples in the photo below.
9. Plastic covered florist wire, a 40 cm piece with a thickness of 0.95 mm or something similar. You can do it without wire, but then you can't change the position of the snake.
10. Pliers.
11. Eyes. You can use toy eyes (4-6 mm), then you will need superglue gel, pliers and a piece of adhesive tape. You can also make eyes with embroidery, sew on beads, rhinestones, buttons or mould it from oven baked polymer clay.
12. Sewing needle and sewing thread of matching color.
13. Optional. If you want to turn your snake into a brooch, you will need a clasp and thread for sewing in matching colors.
14. An owl.
15. A measurement tape.
16. Hand towel.
