Make a heart pin cushion with a little elf to support your creative projects.
In this workshop we will create a cute heart with a little elf in the wet felting technique. Such a heart will be a wonderful gift for a handmade friend - the pin cushion will not only store needles, but also cheer up, and the little elf will support creative ideas. The heart can also be turned into a brooch, a pendant, a fridge magnet.
In the workshop we will practice creating a high-quality felting sculpture, as well as learn how to make a mini pocket, loop, cap and excellent beads that will make a little elf. A lot of positivity from 10 g of wool!
Work time is 1,5 hrs.
1. Mat for wet felting. I use ribbed kitchen cupboard mat from IKEA shop. It sold in rolls in kitchen section of IKEA. You can find something similar.
2. Soap.
3. Water container.
4. Scissors with sharp tips.
5. Piece of mesh fabric (tulle, thin mosquito net or some fabric for tutu skirts), size A5 is enough. You can also use a piece of nylon stockings.
6. Important. Needle felting tools: mat (dishwashing sponge is fine) and felting needle size 38, gauge star. Medium size needle will work too.
7. Wool: you can make a heart from absolutely any wool - from coarse carded wool you will get a fluffier and denser version, you will have to trim the surface, and from extra fine merino it will be smoother and softer. I work with extra fine Australian merino in 18-20 micron ribbon. The finished heart, measuring 6,5 cm in height and 6,5 cm in width, took 10 g of extra fine Australian merino. The more wool you use, the thicker the heart will be.
You need two colours: one for the heart and a pinch of beige for the head of the elf.
8. Sewing needle and sewing thread of matching color and the black thread for eyes and mouth embroidery.
9. An awl.
10. A chopstick.
11. Hand towel.
12. Optional. If you want to turn the heart into a brooch, you will need a clasp and sewing thread of matching color. You can also make the heart into a fridge magnet, then you will need a super strong neodymium magnet (silver colour, 2 magnets minimum 10x3 mm).
On the decor you can also make additions, for example: you can add fibres of viscose, silk, linen or yarn on the surface, as well as make a sparkling heart with glitter (fraction of at least 1-2 mm). Glitter is a micro plastic, so not the most environmentally friendly option. However, if the glitter is already there, rather than bought from scratch, then recycling material is not the worst idea, and the surfaces turn out gorgeous with a shimmering sheen. It is only important to rinse the work carefully, so that the glitter does not leak down the drain, but collects in the mesh - I use a strainer, laid with a piece of silk. And there are special strainers made of fabric.
