Sun Magnet workshop

Sun Magnet workshop

Even on the cloudiest day you can light up your own sunshine! Let's felt a bright sun that will cheer you up every day.

In this workshop we will create a wonderful sun that will lift your spirits even on the cloudiest days. This cute sun can become a useful magnet on the fridge or mood board and keep your important notes. Or it can turn into an extravagant brooch that will leave no one indifferent.

The sun is made with three-dimensional wet felting technique. The workshop is not complicated, suitable for beginners. It is a great way to practice of working with fine details. You can work with any wool.

At the class I will show you how to felt a sun in the wet felting technique from start to finish. We will work together live. The broadcast time is 1,5 hours.

What do we need?

1. Mat for wet felting. I use ribbed kitchen cupboard mat from IKEA shop. It sold in rolls in kitchen section of IKEA. You can find something similar.
2. Soap.
3. Water container.
4. Scissors with sharp tips.
5. Piece of mesh fabric (tulle, thin mosquito net or some fabric for tutu skirts), size A5 is enough. You can also use a piece of nylon stockings.
6. Needle felting tools: mat (dishwashing sponge is fine) and felting needle size 38, gauge star. Medium size needle will work too.
7. The material for the template is a piece of thick plastic bag or laminate underlay 2 mm thick. We need a circle of 9,5 cm in diameter.
8. Wool: you can make the sun from any wool - coarse carded wool will have a more frizzy texture, which you will have to trim with scissors or a razor, and superfine merino will have more thin and fine rays. I used for the sun 6 grams of yellow Australian merino in ribbon 19,5 micron, the size of the finished sun - the ball itself is 4 cm in diameter, the whole diameter, including the rays - 8 cm.
9. A neodymium magnet (also called super strong magnet) with a size of 8x2 mm (larger ones can be even better, they will hold stronger, e.g. 10-12x2-3 mm). Such magnets are silver in color. Ordinary black ones will not work, they are very weak.
10. Alternatively, the sun can be turned into a brooch. In this case, you will also need a brooch clasp and thread in the same color as the sun to sew the clasp on.
11. If you are going to humanize the sun, you will need toy eyes. I have plastic toy eyes 4 mm, you can take smaller or larger. Simple beads will be good too. And you can mould the eyes from oven baked clay (e.g. Fimo), as well as simply felt or embroider. To attach the eyes you need super glue-gel, pliers, awl, pin and tape.
12. A sewing needle and a thread of dark color to embroider the smile.
13. A measurement tape.
14. Hand towel.
