Mistletoe workshop

Mistletoe workshop

Create a sprig of Christmas mistletoe using the magic of wet felting!

This workshop focuses on mistletoe sprigs, which have been a Christmas tradition in many countries since ancient times. For example, mistletoe has been used to decorate many European homes for Christmas, long before Christmas trees. In ancient Celtic countries, mistletoe was held up as the most powerful magical and medicinal plant. To this day, mistletoe is counted among the strongest protective amulets for the home. And a kiss under mistletoe is believed to bring everlasting love.

In this lesson we will make a small sprig of mistletoe, which is sure to bring pleasure and new knowledge. This sprig can be given as a gift as a pendant or turned into an accessory. A variety of botanical ideas can be based on this flower.

We will use the wet felting technique. You can work with absolutely any wool. The project is not complicated and suitable for beginners.

In this workshop I will show you how to felts a sprig of mistletoe from the beginning to the end. We work together in a live broadcast. The broadcasting time is about 2 hours.

What do we need?

  1. 1. Mat for wet felting. I use ribbed kitchen cupboard mat from IKEA shop. It sold in rolls in kitchen section of IKEA. You can find something similar.
  2. 2. Soap.
  3. 3. Water container.
  4. 4. Scissors with sharp tips.
  5. 5. Piece of mesh fabric (tulle, thin mosquito net or some fabric for tutu skirts), size A5 is enough. You can also use a piece of nylon stockings.
  6. 6. The material for the template -  a piece of thick plastic bag or laminate underlay.
  7. 7. Needle felting tools: mat (dishwashing sponge is fine) and felting needle size 38, gauge star. You can also work without it.
  8. 8. Wool: I make a mistletoe with white extra fine Australian merino wool in tops (18-20 microns). But you can use any wool: coarse, fine, combed or carded. More corse wool gives more hairy surface, so you will need to trim the surface afterwards. For a  ready mistletoe branch of about 9-10 cm in height, you need about 3-4 g of wool, depending on the desired size and density.
  9. 9. The decor is optional. The surface can be covered with viscose or silk fibers for some shine and texture. You can also use embroidery or replace the felted berries with beads or pearls. I will do embroidery with wool threads (green, brown and yellow colors).
  10. 10. Sewing needle and a thread of matching color to attach the berries.
  11. 11. Silk ribbon or so to make a pendant.
  12. 12. A measurement tape.
  13. 13. A hand towel.
