Christmas bell workshop

Christmas bell workshop

Magic sparkling bell will be a wonderful decoration on the Christmas tree and a nice little gift, which is easy to make with your own hands.

In this workshop we will create a small sparkling bell to decorate the Christmas tree or winter interior. The bell does not ring, but it creates no less magical festive atmosphere and will make a cute gift. The bell is made in the technique of three-dimensional wet felting. This class is a great practice of sculptural skills in felting.

The workshop is simple, suitable for beginners. You can work with any wool.

At the class I will show you how to felt a bell in the wet felting technique from start to finish. We will work together live. The broadcast time is 1-1,5 hours.

What do we need?

  1. 1. Mat for wet felting. I use ribbed kitchen cupboard mat from IKEA shop. It sold in rolls in kitchen section of IKEA. You can find something similar.
  2. 2. Soap.
  3. 3. Water container.
  4. 4. Scissors with sharp tips.
  5. 5. Piece of mesh fabric (tulle, thin mosquito net or some fabric for tutu skirts), size A5 is enough. You can also use a piece of nylon stockings.
  6. 6. Needle felting tools: mat (dishwashing sponge is fine) and felting needle size 38, gauge star. Medium size needle will work too.
  7. 7. The material for the template is a piece of thick plastic bag or laminate underlay 2 mm thick. We need a circle of 8 cm in diameter.
  8. 8. Wool: you can make a bell from any wool - coarse carded wool will be fluffier and denser, you'll have to shave, and extra fine merino will be more delicate. I have both. Finished bell size is 4 cm in height and 3 cm in diameter  took 2-3 g of extra fine Australian merino roving, slightly larger bell from carded Bergschaf took 4-5 g. If you want to make a funny teasing bell with a tongue, you need a bit of wool of a suitable color for the tongue - mine is dark pink.
  9. 9. Glitter for sparkling surface decoration (optional). Any glitter with larger particles (preferably 1-2 mm) will work, but dust is not suitable.
  10. 10. If you are going to humanize the bell, you will need toy eyes. I have plastic toy eyes 5 mm, you can take smaller or larger. Simple beads will be good too. And you can mould the eyes from oven baked clay (e.g. Fimo), as well as simply felt or embroider. To attach the eyes you need super glue-gel, pliers, a pin and tape.
  11. 11. Something to make the tongue of the bell heavier - a small bead, pebble or tiny round bel (it will make a bit of sound) up to 1 cm in diameter. You can use a piece of aluminum foil too.
  12. 12. A sewing needle and a thread of matching color.
  13. 13. A razor.
  14. 14. A measurement tape.
  15. 15. Hand towel.
